SENSORIUM センソリウム
展覧会「センソリウム」は、従来の工芸と美術の境界を超えた形で、新しい造形表現に挑む作家による作品を紹介する展覧会です。タイトルの「センソリウム」は、視覚、触覚、聴覚、嗅覚、味覚の五感を総括する人間の感覚体験の全体を指します。作品を愛でることは、視覚が優位と思われがちですが、実は、人は、五感を通じて獲得した、それぞれの身体的あるいは心理的な体験を、自身の記憶から蘇らせて作品に投影し、作品から得る新しい体験をフィードバックしています。
工芸作品は、手作業で制作されたかたちと関連付けられ、機能性、技術、陶器、織物、漆、木、金属などの素材の固有の特性に重点が置かれてきました。一方、現代美術の作品は、自己表現、または概念的な探求のためと理解され、形態、象徴性、感情的な影響を重視する傾向があります。展覧会「センソリウム」では、美術と工芸というカテゴリーで作品を分類するのではなく、互いを結びつける特性に着目して、人を介して、ひとつの体験の「回路」が生まれることを期待するものです。観ることで生まれる、作品と私たちの間の創造的な共鳴を脳内に作り出すよう促し、自身の経験を想起し再解釈する。この流動性が世界を見る新たな視点と体験を刺激する可能性を示しています。
展覧会の会場となる泉涌寺は、京都府京都市東山区にある真言宗泉涌寺派の総本山で、皇室との関わりが深く「御寺（みてら）」とも呼ばれる寺院です。鎌倉時代に月輪大師俊芿によって再興され、歴代天皇の菩提寺として知られ、緑豊かな自然が精神的な存在感と調和しています。人間の感覚の全領域を包み込むことで、泉涌寺での体験の一部始終が記憶に残る体験の回路に組み込まれることでしょう。

The special exhibition “Sensorim”, showcasing works by artists challenging new forms of expression that transcend the boundaries between craft and fine art, will be held at Sennyū-ji Temple in Kyoto, renowned as an imperial temple. The exhibition runs from Thursday 13th November to Sunday 16th November 2025.
‘Sensorium’ is an exhibition that introduces works by artists who challenge new forms of artistic expression, transcending the traditional boundaries between crafts and fine arts. The title ""Sensorium"" refers to the totality of human sensory experience that encompasses all five senses: sight, touch, hearing, smell, and taste. While visual perception tends to be considered dominant in appreciating artworks, in reality, people revive physical or psychological experiences acquired through all five senses from their own memories, project them onto the artwork, and the new experiences gained from the work is then integrated back into the audience.
Craft works have generally been associated with handmade forms, with emphasis on functionality, technique, and the inherent characteristics of the materials such as ceramics, textiles, lacquer, wood, and metal. On the other hand, contemporary art works are generally understood as a means for self-expression or conceptual exploration, and tend to emphasize form, symbolism, and emotional impact.
Rather than categorizing works by the categories of fine arts and crafts, the exhibition ""Sensorium"" focuses on the characteristics that unite them, with the hope to create a ‘circuit' of unified experience through the participation of people.It encourages the conception of creative resonance between the works and ourselves in our minds through viewing, making us recollect and reinterpret our experiences. This fluidity demonstrates the potential to stimulate new perspectives and experiences of seeing the world.
The venue for the exhibition, Sennyu-ji temple, is the head temple of the Shingon Sennyu-ji sect located in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture. It has deep connections with the Imperial family and is also called ""Mitera"" (Imperial Temple). Restored in the Kamakura period by Master Gatchirin Daishi Shunjo, it is known as the bodhi temple of generations of emperors, and its abundant natural greenery harmonizes with its spiritual presence. By encompassing the entire realm of human senses, the complete experience at Sennyu-ji temple will surely be incorporated into the circuit of memorable experiences.
